A rowing club

Out before six.

A rowing club on two miles of flat water. Learn to row in eight weeks, or join with a crew and be on the water on Tuesday.

Nobody here started able.

Every member came through the same eight week course, including the ones who now go to Henley. The first two weeks are in a boat that cannot tip over, which is less humiliating than it sounds.

  • Eight weeks, one evening a week
  • Boats, blades and a coach found
  • No previous anything required
03

The water is the point.

Ninety minutes on flat water before the town is awake, and then you go to work. Most people join to get fit and stay for the hour before the day starts.

04

It is a club, not a gym.

Somebody has to help carry the boat, put the blades away and take a turn in the launch. That is the deal and it is the reason it costs what it does.

Learn to row

Eight weeks, Tuesday evenings, in a group of six with one coach. At the end of it you can take a boat out on your own, which is the only qualification we recognise.

02

Join as a rower

If you have rowed before, come down on a Saturday and go out with whoever is short. There is no trial and no committee. Somebody will put you in a boat.

One morning

Sixteen frames of the hour you are getting up for.

From the last of the dark to full light, which is about how long an outing takes. The boats are back on the rack before most people have had breakfast.
