Two bedrooms at the foot of a working light on Fern Head, let by the week from March to October.

The light still turns.

It is automatic now and it sweeps every seven seconds. The bedroom shutters are lined for a reason, and most people stop noticing it by the second night.

The stair is yours to climb.

Ninety eight steps to the lamp room, up whenever you like, and a gallery outside it we ask you not to use in a gale.

The track floods at spring tides.

Twice a month the last four hundred metres go under for about two hours. The tide table comes with the booking, and nobody has been caught out yet.

No signal, no exceptions.

There is a landline in the hall and a shelf of charts and paperbacks. The nearest shop is nine miles off and shuts at one on a Wednesday.

The station

A light, a cottage, and a great deal of weather.

The station has been here since the eighteen seventies. Only the cottage part of it is yours, which is rather the point of it.

01Fern HeadThe light sits at the tip. The cottage is the low building tucked in behind it.

02The towerBuilt in 1878, automated in 1989, and painted every fourth summer whether it needs it or not.

03The approachThe track runs along the top of the headland and drops to the station at the very end.

04Ninety eight stepsStone as far as the first landing, then iron the rest of the way to the lamp.

How a week works.

BookWeeks run Saturday to Saturday. We confirm by email with the tide table for your dates attached.

ArriveAny time after four, and not within an hour either side of high water on a spring tide.

SettleThe stove is laid, the oil tank is full, and the key to the tower is on the hook by the door.

LeaveBy ten on the Saturday. Strip the beds and put the charts back where you found them.
