Lodestone

Sound, seen.

Bring the pointer close

01

It moves to the music.

A pool of ferrofluid sits over the driver. Every beat pulls the liquid up into spikes, and they sink back as the beat fades.

02

Low, mid, high.

Pull the sound apart and each part moves its own drop: the kick and the bass, the voice and the snare, and the hats at the very top.

Then it rests.

Turn the music off and the pool lies flat, a black mirror on the shelf.

About the liquid

Questions.

What is ferrofluid?

Oil carrying particles of iron so small that they stay suspended in it. Near a magnet it rises into spikes along the field, and it lies flat again when the field goes.

Does it only move to the bass?

It moves to everything the driver plays, most of all the kick and the bass line, because those move the magnet furthest.

Is the liquid sealed?

Yes. It sits under the glass dome and is never touched or topped up.
