Woven on a hand loom.

Blankets in undyed British wool, warped by hand and woven one at a time.

Two fleeces to a blanket.

Herdwick and Jacob, scoured and spun in Yorkshire and woven here. The colour is the sheep, not a dye bath.

Four hundred ends threaded one at a time. After that it runs at about a metre an hour, and that is the whole of the speed.

Wash it cold and lay it flat. Felting tightens the weave, which is why an old blanket outlasts a new one.

One forty by two hundred centimetres, with a hand finished edge. Six weeks from the day you order.

What is in it

Every colour on this page came off a sheep that colour. Nothing is bleached and nothing is dyed, so the run varies year to year.

HerdwickCoarse and grey brown. The warp in every blanket, because it takes the tension.

JacobA piebald fleece, sorted by hand into a light and a dark before spinning.

Shetland mooritThe warm brown in the weft. Undyed, and it fades a little in sun.

CheviotThe pale stripe. As white as wool gets without bleach, which is not very.

On the loom

Six weeks from order, most of which is waiting for the spinner rather than weaving.

Fleeces come in raw and get sorted on the table. About a third of each one is not good enough and goes for insulation.

Scoured and spun to a two ply worsted in Yorkshire. This is the part we do not do ourselves and the part that sets the date.

Four hundred ends measured on the mill and threaded through the heddles one at a time. A full day, sitting down.

Off the loom, washed cold, laid flat to felt, then the edge is hand knotted and trimmed.
