About this conceptYour expression of wish, step by step
In short
If you die while you are covered by Group Life, a lump sum is paid. An expression of wish form tells the scheme's trustees who you would like it to go to. It takes about ten minutes, and you can change it whenever you like.
Before you start, have ready
- The full names of the people you would like to name
- Their dates of birth and addresses, if the form asks for them
- How you would like the money shared between them
Five steps
0 of 5 steps done
Get the form
Ask HR, or look on your benefits platform. In most schemes it is a short form you can complete online or on paper.
Choose who to name
You can usually name anyone you choose: a partner, children, other family, friends or a charity. You can name more than one person.
What does ‘trustees’ mean?
The people who look after the scheme. When a lump sum is paid, they decide who receives it, guided by your expression of wish.
What does ‘beneficiary’ mean?
Someone who receives money from the scheme, such as the lump sum paid if you die.
Decide how to share it
Give each person a share as a percentage. The shares need to add up to 100%. The checker below adds them up for you.
Share checker
Numbers only. Names are not asked for, and nothing is saved or sent.
Total: 0%. Enter a share for each person you plan to name.
Sign and return it
Sign and date the form, return it the way the form describes, and keep a copy for your own records.
Review it when life changes
Look at your form again whenever your circumstances change, for example if you:
- marry, form a civil partnership or move in with a partner
- separate or divorce
- have or adopt a child
- lose someone you had named
Your ticks are saved in this browser only. Nothing is sent anywhere.
Good to know
In most schemes an expression of wish is not legally binding. The trustees use it as a guide, which lets them pay the money quickly and fairly, even if circumstances have changed since you completed it. Your scheme's documents explain how yours works.
Next step: ask for your form
Ask HR or your benefits platform for the expression of wish form, then return it signed. It only takes a few minutes to update later.
